Family background
Gunner Albert Edwin Baigent was born in Sullington to William and Alice Baigent. His father was a stockman and by 1901 the family had moved to Lurgashall, where William worked on Stag Park Farm and the family lived in Stag Park Cottages. Eight children were born to Alice but by 1911 four had already died in infancy and Albert had two surviving brothers and one sister.
Military service
Albert enlisted in Horsham into the Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery.
Death and commemoration
Albert was killed in action on 23 April 1917 aged 19, probably during the battle of Arras which took place between 9 April and 16 May 1917. He is buried in Lievin Communal Cemetery Extension , Pas de Calais, France and was awarded the British and Victory medals.
