Family background

Alfred Hunt was born and brought up in Petworth, the son of Alfred and Charlotte Hunt. Alfred Senior was a farm labourer, and the 1911 census shows them as living in Hoads Common Lodge. Alfred Junior was a stockman and labourer living at home in 1911 with two brothers, William and Ebenezer.

Military service

Alfred enlisted in Petworth. His battalion landed in France in March 1915. During 1916 they were involved in the battles of Thiepval Ridge, Ancre Heights and The Ancre.

Death and commemoration

Private Alfred Frank Hunt died of wounds on 18 October 1916 aged 23. He is buried in the Bouzincourt Communal Cemetery.
