Family background and early life
Beatrice Wallace was born on 5 October 1840 at Dalkeith, seven miles south-east of Edinburgh. She was the youngest child (of seven) of George Douglas Wallace (1802–1844), a master tailor, and his wife, Alison née Watt (1800–1865).
She was baptised on 1 November 1840 at the United Presbyterian Church at Dalkeith.
At the 1851 census, Beatrice (aged 10) was living with her mother (now a widow) and two siblings, plus four lodgers, at Edmonstone, then a small village between Dalkeith and Edinburgh. Ten years later, she was living with her mother (now 60) at the home of her 29-year old brother David, a ploughman on Southfield Farm, Cranston, four miles south-east of Dalkeith. Beatrice’s occupation was recorded as an agricultural labourer.

Their daughter, Alison was born at Joppa Pans on 21 July 1868.
Beatrice died at Joppa Pans on 9 September 1873, aged 32. The cause of death was “Pulmonary Consumption [Tuberculosis], 2 years”.
