Corporal Pull was the son of the Head Gardener at Petworth House who lived in a house located within the gardens.
Family background
Charles Pull was born in Petworth to Edwin Walter and Sarah Ann Pull. Edwin was a gardener, and later Head Gardener at Petworth House. They had 5 children in all, of whom one had died by 1911. The other boys were Arthur Smedley and George William, and their sisters were Doris Mary and Leonora Annie. Charles followed in his father’s trade and was a gardener living at home in 1911.
Military service
Corporal Pull enlisted in Petworth and was for some reason transferred to the Brigade that worked with the trench mortars, the guns that fired against enemy trenches prior to an assault.
Death and commemoration
Corporal Charles Henry Pull was killed in action on 26 August 1917 aged 24. He is buried in Mendinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium. He is commemorated on the board in Midhurst Rother College.
