Family background

Edmund John Hedger was the son of William and Harriet Hedger, of High Haly, Petworth. His father was a waggoner and in 1911 the family were living at High Hoes, just to the south of Petworth. Edmund was the eldest of four children; he had two sisters Eliza and Emma and a brother William.

Military service

Private Edmund John Hedger enlisted in Chichester into the Royal Sussex Regiment.

Death and commemoration

Private Edmund John Hedger was killed in action on 21 September 1918 aged 21. He was awarded the British and Victory medals. He is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial.
