Family background

Geoffrey Charles Hood was the son of Charles and Florence Hood, nee Mackrell, who had married on 5 June 1895 in Battersea.

In 1901 Charles Hood (31), insurance superintendent and Florence B Hood (27), were living with their sons Geoffrey C (5) and Victor R (3) at 75 Mount Pleasant Road, St Helen’s, Sussex.

On 18 October 1906 Geoffrey Charles Hood was admitted to Midhurst Grammar School. Prior to this he had spent one and a half years at Midhurst National School following previous attendance at Mount Pleasant Board School in Hastings. At the time of admission to the Grammar School his address was Ashfield Road, Midhurst, Sussex. He was granted a three year fee exemption by the governors. He left on 8 April 1910 to become a clerk for Thomas Cook.

In the 1911 census he was 15 years of age and listed as a nephew in the household of Richard Parsons (59), railway audit clerk, at Duncton Green, Kent. Also in the household were Lydia Eliza Parsons (58) and Ellen Robins (19), servant. Geoffrey’s employment was given as clerk ‘tourist agent’

In the 1911 census his parents: Charles Hood (41) and Florence Beatrice (37) were living with their children Victor Richard (12), Kathleen Florence (11), Cyril Arthur (7) and Philip Douglas (3) at 5 Brookfield Terrace, Highfield Road, Bognor Regis, Sussex. Charles Hood was working as an Assistant Superintendent of Insurance Agents.

Geoffrey Charles Hood was killed in action.

He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Face 13C, the Redhill War memorial and on the Board in Midhurst Rother College.

Subsequent family history

Philip Douglas Hood married Doris Assheton Taylor on 2 February 1936 in Khartoum Cathedral.

Charles Hood died in 1954

Florence Beatrice, widow died 27 July 1955. Her address at that time was 66 Sandlands Road, Tadworth, Walton-on-the-Hill, Surrey. Probate was granted to Victor Richard Hood and Cyril Arthur Hood.

Kathleen Florence Hood died in 1983

Victor Richard Hood died in 1993

Cyril Arthur Hood died in 1995.
