In 1891, two families with the surname of Petter lived next door but one to each other at Maiden Marsh, Durleigh and both had sons named George! However, it is the eldest [by eleven years], George Petter that is commemorated on the Rogate War Memorial.
Family background
George Petter was born in Rogate in 1878. He was the fifth child of eight children of James Petter, who was also born in Rogate and his wife Frances, who was born in Harting.
In 1881, the family lived at Pear Tree Farm where James was an agricultural labourer while George was at school. By 1891, the family had moved to Maiden Marsh, James had died and Frances was head of the family. George was working as a farm labourer. He was still living at home in Maiden Marsh and working as a farm labourer in 1911, with his brother Charles and mother Frances.
Military service
George enlisted in Winchester into the 1st Battalion of The Hampshire Regiment.
Death and commemoration
George Petter was killed in action near Ypres on 26 April 1915. He is buried in Oostaverne Wood Cemetery, Wyschaete, Belgium and commemorated on the Rogate War Memorial.
