George was born in Petworth but had moved to St Leonards-on-Sea by the time he was 11.
Family background
George Ramsay Murray was the son of Andrew and Elizabeth Murray. Andrew was a bank manager and George had two older sisters and one younger sister. George did not live in Petworth for long because by 1891 the family were living in Hastings. In 1901 he was still living at home with no occupation.
Civil Service career
In October 1903, George joined the India Office, following which he would have been sent out to India.
Military service
On 30 April 1915, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Cavalry Branch of the Indian Army, and was later attached to 13th Duke of Connaught’s Own Lancers (Watson’s Horse).
In July 1916 the regiment moved from the North West Frontier to Mesopotamia for the relief of Kut-al-Amara.
Death and commemoration
Kut-al-Amara was also known as Kut. The town, with British and Indian soldiers in it, had been besieged for many months and he probably died in the battle to regain it. He is buried in the Amara cemetery Iraq.
