Family background
John Pullen was born and raised in Petworth. His parents were Alfred and Agnes, who lived in The Shimmings (valley just east of Petworth town). Alfred was a gardener and John had one brother, Alfred, and five sisters, Winifred, Florence, Edith, Nellie and Dorothy.
Military career
John was recorded in 1911 as being in the 1st Cavalry Brigade of 3rd Dragoon Guards, stationed in the Wellington Lines, Aldershot, which is where he had enlisted.
Death and commemoration
John Pullen died of wounds on 28 September 1915, but it is not known where he came by those wounds. It will have been on the Western Front as he is buried in the Bethune Town Cemetery. F.80
