Family background
Sidney Harris was born in Winchester, the son of James and Mary Harris. James was recorded as a journeyman miller in 1881 and a baker and confectioner in 1891. He had died by 1901 but his wife continued the trade and was a baker and confectioner in Market Square in 1911. In 1911 Sidney was a baker’s assistant (presumably in his mother’s shop) and living at home. He had four siblings, Albert, Oliver, Merinda and Lily
Military service
Private Harris enlisted at Horsham to the RASC, the branch of the services responsible for supplying all supplies to the army and transporting equipment and medical units.
Death and commemoration
It is not clear what Private Harris died of when he passed away on 30 October 1918. He was in the military hospital at Hastings, and his body was brought for burial in the Horsham Road Cemetery in Petworth. When he died he left £1756 11s 8d.
Subsequent family history
Sidney Harris had married Alice Hollingdale of East Street, Petworth in Jan-March 1912. They had a daughter Faith in July- Sept 1918, just before he died.
