Thomas Evans was a teacher at Midhurst Grammar School, before enlisting in 1916. Although he is commemorated on the Memorial Board at Midhurst Rother College, little more is known about him. We have been unable to locate any military records nor identify him on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records.

The following information has been extracted from the Midhurst Grammar School staff record:

He was born on 11 May 1886.

Thomas Evans attended the County School in Wrexham 1898 – 1905. During this time, he passed Junior and Senior Welsh Board examinations and the London Matriculation in 1904.

He was awarded a BA from Durham University in 1910.

Prior to his arrival at Midhurst Grammar School, he taught at Oxenhouse House School in Jersey from Easter 1911 to Christmas 1914.

On 18 January 1915, Thomas Evans was appointed a master at Midhurst Grammar School for a probationary period.

He left the school on 24 June 1916 to embark on military service.

His Midhurst Grammar School staff record states that he ‘died of wounds [in] autumn 1917’

At Midhurst Grammar School his ‘special’ subjects were listed as Latin, French and Greek. He taught Latin throughout the school, Junior History and English and ‘some elementary arithmetic’. He was also an Assistant House Master.
