 Family background

Thomas Shenton Kelway Tregunna was the son of Thomas Morris Tregunna and Mabel Jane Tregunna, nee Kelway.

In 1901, Thomas Tregunna (35), assistant assurance superintendent, was living with his wife Mabel (28), and children: Thomas (4), Dorothy (3) and Ewart (1) in East Street Okehampton, Devon.

In 1911, Thomas Morris Tregunna (46), assurance superintendent, Mabel Jane (38), Thomas Shenton K (14), Dorothy Gwendolyn B (13), Ewart Morris (11), Leslie Marsdon (9), and George Leverton (6), were living at 38 Southgate, Chichester, Sussex.

Midhurst Grammar School Pupil Admissions 1903 – 1916 records Thomas Tregunna, son of Thomas Morris Tregunna, district assurance superintendent, being admitted to the school on 18 September 1911. He passed the Oxford junior exams in July 1912 and senior in July 1914. He was recognised as a pupil teacher in 1912. He left on 28 July 1914 to attend Borough Road College, London.

Military service

Thomas Tregunna enlisted in London.

He was awarded Victory and British medals.

Death and commemoration

Thomas Shenton Kelway Tregunna was killed in action in France on 6 September 1916.

He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier and Face 9c and 13c.

His name appears on the Borough College Roll of Honour, where he was a student, however the CWGC record of his death still defines him as ‘student’, suggesting his studies were incomplete at the time of his enlistment. The college is part of Brunel University, London

He is also listed on the Board in Midhurst Rother College.

Currently a Roll of Honour is under construction for the 14th Regiment (London Scottish) commemorating men who lost their lives during the Battle of the Somme. It begins on 23 June 1916, first day of the preliminary artillery bombardment and ends 30 November 1916. The objective is for completion on 1 July 2016. Thomas Tregunna is already listed.

Subsequent family history

Ewart Morris Tregunna married Violet M W Holdaway in 1929 on the Isle of Wight.

Thomas Morris Tregunna died on 5 April 1944. His address was given as 38 Southgate, Chichester. Probate was granted to Mabel Jane Tregunna, widow, and Ewart Morris Tregunna, bank clerk.

Dorothy Gwendolyn Beryl Tregunna of 38 Southgate, Chichester, spinster, died on 13 December 1954 in the London Hospital, Stepney. Probate was granted to Ewart Morris Tregunna and Leslie Marsden Tregunna, bank managers.

Mabel Jane Tregunna died in 1956 in Ludlow, Shropshire.

Leslie Marsdon Tregunna died on 2 April 1959 in the New Forest District. His address was given as Knightwood House, Lyndhurst. Probate was granted to Lena Doris Tregunna, widow.

Ewart Morris Tregunna died in 1976 in Southampton.

George Leverton Tregunna died in 1979 in Chichester.
