Family background and early life
Emily Moss was born on 27 June 1843 at Witham Road, Cressing, near Braintree, Essex. She was the sixth of eight surviving children born to William Moss (1803–1871) and his wife Sarah Ann née Gubby (1807-1892).
She was baptised at All Saints’ Church, Cressing on 16 July 1843.
At the 1851 census, the family (William and Sarah and five children) were living at Witham Road Cressing. 47-year old William was an agricultural labourer.
Ten years later, the family were at the same address. 17-year old Emily was working as a silk winder.
Marriage and children
On 26 July 1863, 20-year old Emily married 19-year old Shadrach Joslin at All Saints’ Church, Cressing.
Three months after the marriage, the couple’s first child, Arthur Edward was born at Cressing on 26 October. He was baptised at All Saints church, Cressing on 22 November 1863.
At some time over the next three years, the family moved to the Fitzrovia district of central London where Shadrach first started working as a labourer in a gas works.
Their second child, Rose Emma was born at Charlotte Street, on 7 January 1867, followed by Lily who was born on 5 February 1870 at nearby Cleveland Street.
The family were soon on the move again and at the census in April 1871, Shadrach and Emily, together with their three children were now living at 9 Denmark Terrace in East Ham High Street, in east London. Shadrach was employed as a foreman stoker at Beckton gas works.
Over the next ten years, a further four children were born at Denmark Terrace:

Shadrach born 6 January 1880
Rose, Lily and George were baptised together at Mary Magdalene church in East Ham on 6 September 1874. No record has been found of the baptism of the other children.
At the 1881 census, the family were still at Denmark Terrace; the eldest child, Arthur (aged 17) was now employed as a pupil teacher.
Baby Shadrach died from phthisis on 17 July 1881, aged 18 months. He was buried at St Mary Magdalene church on 22 July.

By 1890, the family had moved to 2 Fairview Villas, Barking Road (south side), East Ham, where they were to remain for the rest of his Shadrach’s life.
At the 1891 census, Shadrach and Emily were living at Fairview Villas with their seven youngest children, plus Emily’s widowed mother, Sarah, aged 84. Of the children, Lily was working as a dressmaker, George as a telegraphist and Albert as a clothier’s assistant. Shadrach was still employed as a foreman stoker at Beckton gas works, doing so until his retirement.
Ten years later, the family (Shadrach, Emily (aged57) and five children) were still at 2 Fairview Villas. Of the children, 34-year old Rose was not employed, 31-year old Lily was a self-employed dressmaker, 23-year old Edith was a draper’s assistant and 18-year old Edwin was a clerk. The youngest child, May aged 13, was still at school. Also living with the family were Shadrach’s 53-year old unmarried sister, Emily Joslin, and 12-year old Sydney George Cable. Sydney was the grandson of Thomas Moss (1841–1914), Emily’s brother.
Shadrach died at home at 2 Fairview Villas, Barking Road, East Ham on 21 December 1916, aged 72.
Shadrach Joslin died at home at 2 Fairview Villas on 21 December 1916, aged 72, and was buried at St Mary Magdalene church on 28 December.
At the 1821 census, Emily and her daughter Rose remained at 2 Fairview Villas. Both gave their occupations as “home duties”.
Death
Emily outlived her husband by 10 years and died at 328 Barking Road, East Ham on 14 March 1927, aged 83. She was buried alongside him, at St Mary Magdalene church.
