From December 1914, the United Grand Lodge of England began to compile a Roll of Honour of all Freemasons who had died in the First World War. The original roll containing 3078 names was printed in book form in 1921. In 1938, a Memorial Shrine was placed under the Memorial Window at Freemasons Hall in Great Queen Street, London. After completion of the memorial shrine, the Roll of Honour, with the addition of over 350 names, was displayed within it on a parchment roll.
